The impact of Sino-US trade war on Chinese lithium battery enterprises
On April 4, 2018, the United States released a list of products imported from China that proposed additional tariffs, including new energy vehicles and related parts. As a counterattack, China also included cars in its list of proposed tariffs on the United States.
The United States mainly fires on Chinese auto parts products, while China mainly fights back against American complete vehicles. With the development of new energy vehicles, my country's lithium battery companies have made great progress. Battery companies represented by Ningde Times and BYD, and battery material companies represented by Xinzhoubang and Duofuoduo have accelerated their international expansion. Will the current Sino-US trade war hinder the expansion of Chinese companies?
In the global lithium battery field, Japanese and South Korean companies have long occupied a leading position, and Chinese companies have come from behind. Why do Europe and the United States, which first ignited the fire of new energy vehicles, not have the world's leading lithium battery companies?
Lithium battery companies have less impact
The list of Chinese imports on which the United States has imposed tariffs includes more than 1,300 items, including lithium batteries and other new energy auto parts. Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the National Passenger Car Market Information Association, told Lithium Battery Big Data that the Sino-US trade war has little impact on lithium battery companies at present. China's lithium battery exports do not account for a large share of the US market. On the other hand, China has a large enough domestic market to digest production capacity. Whether it is electric vehicles or batteries, the business volume exported to the US is relatively small. Plates have limited impact.
However, some industry analysts believe that the domestic industries most affected by this trade friction are steel, aluminum and other industries, especially aerospace, information and communication technology, machinery manufacturing and other fields, followed by industries with a high proportion of trade. Due to the high degree of dependence on advanced production equipment in the lithium battery manufacturing process, it may have a partial impact on the lithium battery manufacturing industry.
Chinese companies accelerate global expansion
In the long run, a trade war will only bring about a lose-lose situation. In recent years, China's lithium battery-related companies have risen rapidly and started to expand globally, competing with Japanese and Korean companies. Recently, news of Chinese battery companies expanding their factories in Europe has been heard endlessly. The United States also has a huge new energy vehicle market. Under the shadow of the trade war, it is difficult for Chinese battery companies to open up the US market.
The global expansion of Chinese companies has begun to take shape in the European market. With the growing demand for electric vehicles in Europe, Chinese power battery companies and material companies have sensed business opportunities and have accelerated their expansion and layout in Europe. At present, lithium battery raw material companies Xingyuan Materials, Jiangsu Guotai, and Tianci Materials are all accelerating the process of promoting the European market. Ningde Times is also considering building factories in Germany, Hungary, and Poland to provide power batteries for car companies including BMW. The specific production scale is determined according to regional market demand.
Lost European and American lithium battery companies
As we all know, the current global power battery field is divided into China, Japan and South Korea. Almost all world-renowned lithium battery manufacturers belong to China, Japan and South Korea. The well-known American power battery company has also been acquired by Wanxiang Group. In Europe and the United States, where the wave of new energy vehicles first started, why is there no world-leading lithium battery company?
In fact, the European and American auto industry chose fuel cells instead of lithium batteries at the beginning. There was also a period of investment boom in lithium batteries in Europe and the United States. Europe and the United States, which wanted to catch up, tried to "eat one bite and become fat", but the result was dismal. In 2013, A123 It went bankrupt and was acquired by China's Vientiane Group. In June last year, BASF also transferred all the equity of the electrolyte business in China and the Suzhou production base to Xin Zhoubang. In addition, many European and American chemical material giants, including Dow Chemical and DuPont, have announced the termination of research and development and related businesses in lithium battery materials.
At present, the development pattern of the global lithium battery industry chain has basically been determined. The focus of competition in the lithium battery industry chain is cost and cost performance. European and American self-owned companies no longer have advantages. Under such circumstances, it is difficult for European and American battery-related companies to develop again. Industry analysts believe that the European and American markets will only be a lithium battery consumption market in the future, and it will become an industry trend for Chinese and Korean lithium battery companies to build factories in Europe and North America.
Therefore, in the long run, the Sino-US trade war will not pose a threat to Chinese lithium battery companies, and it is hard to say that Chinese battery companies have no ambition to enter the US market.
